There is no getting around it, file-sharing programs are becoming widespread and any one can create one. If you thought that Napster was your last resort to the river of files on the Internet then you are in for a surprise. It turns out that these file-sharing programs have been around since the creation of the WWW and only with the introduction of the money making possibilities has it become so popular. There are many different file servers out there and most of them use a slew of protocols known as an IRC (Internet Relay and Chat) like Napster, Mynapster, Mirc, Xirc, Virc, and much more. All it takes is a server, a drive for adventure, and some bandwidth. All other information can be found at the following links on how to program the software.

With all that said it is quite obvious that there is no getting around this file-sharing going on. AOL, one of the largest violators of music sharing is in the process of purchasing Time Warner, one of the largest record companies. Also it is important to note that AOL has acquired Nullsoft, the creators of Winamp, the match that started this MP3 craze.
I am not trying to bash AOL but I would like to point out that AOL has the power to support artists while keeping music free to the public. Whether AOL will use this power to put other file sharing business out of service, like Scour.com is unlikely but it is important that if you download software, you need to support the maker buy purchasing their product when you can or send the artist a donation.
