  • Introduction
What we will be doing in the following section is adding the proper protocols for file sharing as well as explaining why these protocols and settings are so important. Although I do not go into DNS servers, which is a way for you to connect to the Internet and more administration but is also more expensive to handle and maintain.
    Identification
When you install you network card you might notice that the added "Network Neighborhood" icon on your desktop, this is good. Right click on the icon and choose properties, here you can add protocols and change the network settings. First of all you need to click on the identification tab and choose a workgroup, this is simply a name for your network. You should think of this as a chat room, workgroups are the individual places where computers can exchange resources. For example, you can have one classroom be a certain workgroup names science and another classroom be in another workgroup named history, this helps to break down and organize where people are located on the network.

You should realize that the network neighborhood name is case sensitive and in order for other computers to belong to that network they need to have the exact same network neighborhood name. On the other hand, computer names must have unique names. If two computers have the same name and try to log on to the network at the same time then one of them will get an error stating that the username is already in use.

    Access control
Choose OK and click on the access control tab, choose how you want the network to be setup, I use the user-level access control because I allow all users to share all resources with each other.

    Network configuration
Now click back on the configuration tab. Here you might notice in the center there is a drop-down option box, change the Primary Network Logon to "Microsoft Family Logon". This will create a new environment for everyone in your family or work space, to create a new profile all you have to do is enter a new name and password when you start up. A new profile basically means that different people can have different desktop settings without annoying a fellow person.

    Protocol setup
I know this might seem like a lot of running around but this was done for a good reason, first of all it was because you needed to do these things in order to have a functional network. Also I did it in this order so when you add the protocols and restart you computer, you will not have to alter any other information.

Now as you are looking at your network configuration screen you will want to click the "file and printer sharing" button, make sure that you are allowing file and printer sharing.

Now we are going to add proper protocols so that if you decide to do something in the future like play games over the network you will be able to. So click on the "add" button and a screen will appear that will let you add various protocols and services.
Since we are working with Microsoft Windows we will only be adding Microsoft protocols and services.
This is where you will want to add two services, you will do this by clicking on the services option and on the left-hand side you will select the Microsoft option. Notice that the options on the right hand side will have 3 selections, you need the following:
  • Client for Microsoft Networks
  • Microsoft family Logon

  •    Great now all we have to do is add the following protocols:
  • IPX/SPX-compatible protocol - A standard that most games use to communicate over the network
  • TCP/IP- A protocol for Internet communication
  • NetBEUI -This is basically an interpreter so that different protocols and software applications
       can talk to each other.

You add these protocols just like how you added the services but instead of clicking on the services option in the component selection box, you will choose the protocol option. Like before you will use the Microsoft manufacture and on the right-hand side you will see a long list of items, you will need the ones stated just above. When this is all done, Windows will ask for the windows CD which has all the software you need in order to share resources.
After the computer restarts you will be ready to share files and printers by right-clicking an the drive of file and choose sharing. This will allow you not to only specify that files the other computers can see but you can also put a password any drive incase you only want a certain person to see the drive.
