Setting up a proxy server today is becoming more and more popular due to its low cost and its ability to let all users on your personal network to access the Internet through any Internet service like ADSL, Cable, T1-T3 or even a regular modem.
The first step is to make sure that you can see everyone on your network in you network neighborhood and make sure that everyone has a TCP/IP protocol installed. Now for the server computer "that is the computer that will be connected to the Internet" you will need to download the proxy software that is free and can be downloaded at www.analogx.com.
For the server you will want to install the AnalogX software through a simple setup program which does not require any configuration or special setup options.
Because you need to have the program running in order to share the Internet, you might want to use the task manager that comes with win95 and win98. What you will need to do is add the proxy software as a task but have it load every time you start your computer. The proxy software does not automatically load the proxy software because a proxy server is not always wanted every time you start you computer because it you might not want others to access the internet.
The only setting you really need to find is the address of the servers IP, this is a simple task that can be accomplished by clicking on the start menu an selecting the Run option. Now type winipcfg and press enter, you will then see a screen like the one below that shows the address of every Internet device you have. Select your network adapter and write down the IP address, which might look like 169.254.0.0.
As for every client every client computer you will want to enter the control panel and click on the Internet icon. Click on the connection tab and choose the "connect to the Internet using a local area network" and "connect to the Internet using a proxy server". Click on the advanced button and enter the following information as best as you can:
Protocol | Description | Port |
HTTP | Web browsing | 6588 |
HTTPS | Secure Web browsing | 6588 |
SOCKS4 | TCP/IP Proxy | 1080 |
SOCKS4a | TCP/IP Proxy with DNS support | 6588 |
SOCKS5 | partial TCP/IP Proxy | 1080 |
NNTP | Usenet Newsgroup | 119 |
POP3 | receive e-mail | 110 |
SMTP | Send e-mail | 25 |
FTP | file transfer | 21 |
This is only the information that you are able to use with this proxy server but you will only be able to enter HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and SOCKS. You will also however need to enter need to enter the IP address for each protocol, remember the IP address you recorded from the server computer from using the winipcfg utility.
Congratulations you have successfully setup a proxy server!!! There is one problem though, if you are interested on installing programs like AOL Instant Messenger you will need to set it up to connect through a proxy server. Also if you are a growing company you might want to create many proxy servers for security reasons. Like one computer for mail services, another for Internet and yet another for like FTP and yet another for a web page. This would especially be good if you were in a situation where you have a fast server computer for FTP and HTTP, when a slower computer can be used for the e-mail services. So if one computer were to get over worked with mail or FTP it would not affect the Internet for your client computers.
